Fun and Frugal Holiday Ideas

Here are a bunch of holiday ideas that I found looking around and doing research.

Fan Share: Cute Melting Snowman Cookies

 Prep Time: 1 Hour
 Yields: 1 Dozen Cookies

 1 dozen sugar cookies
1 pouch Betty Crocker White Cookie Icing
1 pouch Betty Crocker Black Cookie Icing
1 box Betty Crocker Classic Colors Writing Icings
1 bottle Betty Crocker Rainbow Sprinkles
 12 marshmallows

 1. Ice cookies with White Cookie Icing. Allow icing to drip off sides to create melting effect.

 2. Let cookies dry for 30 minutes.

 3. While cookies are drying, cut about ¼ inch off the marshmallows to shorten the snowman’s head. Use Black Cookie Icing and Orange Sprinkles to make faces on the marshmallows.

 4. Once White Cookie Icing has crusted over, adhere marshmallows carefully by adding a small amount of additional White Cookie Icing to bottom of marshmallow.

 5. Add remaining decorations with Cookie and Writing Icings.

 6. Cookies will be completely dry within 4 hours.

Wouldn't these make the cutest package toppers instead of an ordinary bow.  You could use them for ornaments afterwards.

Homemade Candy Canes

http://www.justapinch.com/recipes/dessert/candy/homemade-candy-canes.html

2 cups sugar
1/2 cup light corn syrup...
1/2 cup water
1/4 tsp. cream of tartar
1 tsp. peppermint extract
1 tsp. red food coloring

In heavy-bottomed large saucepan or small pot, combine first 4 ingredients and stir until sugar dissolves. Cook, without stirring to hard-ball stage. (265 degrees.) Remove from heat and add peppermint extract. Divide into 2 portions, and add coloring to one part. Pour out onto buttered cookie sheets. (Pour half onto one sheet, then add coloring to the rest and then pour onto second sheet.) when it's cool enough to handle, start pulling each part seperately. (Best done with 2 people, but if doing alone, go back and forth pulling each.) When you feel like you just can't pull anymore, form into ropes and twist them together. Cut into 8" lengths, form into the shape of candy canes, and place on lightly buttered platter til fully hardened.

This would be so much fun to do and then use it every year as a decoration.  Those feet only stay little for a short time!!
